Medicare rebates are available for psychological treatment by registered psychologists under the Australian Government's Better Access to Mental Health Care initiative. This scheme allows those living with common mental health problems to have greater access to psychologists and more affordable mental healthcare.
To receive treatment through Medicare you must be referred by a GP, psychiatrist or paediatrician. Your doctor will need to complete a Mental Health Treatment Plan before referring you to a registered psychologist with a Medicare Provider Number.
Your doctor may suggest a suitable psychologist, or you can find a psychologist with a Medicare Provider Number and relevant expertise in your area by searching on ‘Medicare psychologist’ at the full desktop version of the APS FindAPsychologist service, www.findapsychologist.org.au.
